Bettas are vividly colored fish, with long flowy fins. They are popular pick for many beginners due to the variety of colors. Males are very territorial so are usually kept solitary. This can especially be true towards other males. They are hardy so make a great fish for beginners. They are usually very active, especially in the right setup.

Tank Size

Minimully they should be in a 5 gallon tank. They are often advertised in small cups or bowls but it is important that they have plenty of room to swim to avoid stress

75-82 is an ideal tempature. They are tropical fish and thrive in water in the upper 70’s to low 80’s. It is important to keep water warm and stable. Colder water will reduce their activity. A good water heater is important as it will keep the tempature of your entire aquarium consistant and accurate.

They perfer a ph of 6.5-7.5. Betta adapt weel but do best in clean non-hard water. Must be consistant with water changes.

Bettas are carnivorous/insectivouous. Feed them high protein betta pellets or flakes and suppliment with frozen or live bloodwomrs and brine shrimp. Avoid overfeeding to prevent bloating.

Bettas are a solitary fish. If you want to add them to a community choose wisely. Do not pair with other males. Keep peaceful tank mates like rsboras, corydoras, or snails. Be sure if adding more than just a betta you have a 10-20 gallon tank.

Bettas live on average 3-5 years as pets. With great care some have been known to live longer.

Bettas are egg layers and bubble nesters. Males build floating bubble nests and then will court females beneath them. After the eggs have been laid the male will protect them in the nest. Bettas must be paired carefully and the female should be removed after laying the eggs.

Bettas are easy to care for but if yours appears to be sick it could due to fin rot, ich, or velvet. Fin rot appears as tattered fins. This is often due to poor water quality. Ich and velvet come from parasite and a treatable with medications. You can avoid these issues by maintaining good water quality but if they occur prompt treatment will keep your betta swimming strong. They may also suffer from bladder issues if fed too much or do not have a varied diet.

Bettas are an easy fsh for beginners as long as you do your research before hand. Many beleive they are a low maintance fish that do not require any work but you do need to give them the same care and attenion you would any other fish.

Bettas can make an excellent starter fish, especially if you are unsure if you want to get into the hobby or not. The great thing about them is how easy the maintenance is. It is a great first step in learning all the ins and outs of fishkeeping.
